Check this craigslist shit. If it wasn't about to be christmas, and I didn't need money for presents for you ingrates, I would totally buy this for myself. It's the greatest all-in-one cassette recording studio in the history of the world, the Tascam 688.
I took this recorder in trade for $300.00 someone owed me. I just want to get my money back. I don't know much about it other than I recorded and played back on each track to make sure it works. It seems like a real solid unit. I was told that this unit cost $3200.00 new. I also ordered a manual for it off of ebay that goes with it. This unit has 8 Tracks of simultaneous recording on a standard cassette tape and is MIDI capable.
This guy is correct, in the early 90's this little fucker was over three thousand dollars. And the meter bridge? Oh fuck yeah. A downside is that because the controls are digital, some of them have problems with the display, which is pretty balls. I don't have three hundred bucks to spend on it, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
