Koko is smarter than you are.



We watched the film Koko: A Talking Gorilla, and were struck again by how limited our concepts of personhood are. Koko understands what you're saying, and can sign back to you. She can use a symbolic logic keyboard to speak to you, is fully self aware and recognizes herself in a mirror and on film. She's more intelligent than many mentally challenged adults, and you wouldn't deny their human rights, would you? The fact that great apes aren't treated as legally human is appalling to me, what do you think? Daniel? Dave? Robert?
